• Peoples (more than 50 tribes): Wolof (36%); Fula/Tukulor (27%); Jola (14%); Serer (13%); Mandinka/Bambara (13%); Balanta; Manjak; Bassari; Arabs (Mauritanians & Lebanese); other: Cape Verdeans, French, West Africans…

• Languages: French (official), Wolof, Fula, Serer, Jola, Mandinka

• Literacy Rate: 39.1%

• Population Below Poverty Line: 54%

• Capital: Dakar (4 million people)

• Religions: African Folk/ Sufi brotherhood Islam (90%), indigenous beliefs 4%, “Christians”: 6%; (Roman Catholics 5%); Evangelicals: 0, 05%. More than 98% of Senegalese practice in fact traditional religion.

• Officially more than 90% of Senegalese are Muslims. Born again believers are a rarity (0, 05% of the total population). There are very few Christian Leaders. Believers are generally scattered and poorly taught. Major areas of the country are virtually untouched with the Gospel.

It is unrealistic to think that these people can

be evangelized by existing churches.

Church-planting would be the right strategy to

reach them.
